As the first anniversary of the Hot Steppers arrived in September, it was momentous that in the same month, and after only a year, the team became affiliated with the Welsh Walking Football Association. In addition and just 9 days later, four of the team were selected and walked out onto a pitch in Redditch to play for the over 40s and over 60s Welsh Women’s Walking Football teams.
To say, as a Hot Steppers team, we were proud of Jo, Jane, Kate & Leanne would have been an understatement. Although secretly we still prefer you all in pink! A special shout out to Jane Waters and Kate Lloyd who both made their Welsh debut.
Needless to say the Welsh teams played extremely well – the over 40s securing a 3-1 win against the Republic of Ireland, and a 2-1 win against England. The over 60s had a superb game, and rounded off the tournament with a 1-0 win over England.
The past three months have certainly been eventful, including an International 4 Nations Women’s Walking Football Tournament in Bordeaux, with games against France, Italy and England. This led to our four Hot Steppers receiving their first Welsh caps in November.
Alongside their international caps, our own Hot Stepper – Leanne Rees Smith was named as Player of the Tournament in Bordeaux by Hedley Austin – chair of the Wales Walking Football Federation.
Congratulations to you all! The Hot Steppers team are unbelievably proud of you, and we can’t wait to see you all continue your success with the Welsh squad.
